Hey Folks

Another image from my little venture into the winter wonderland of Wrangell St. Elias National Park out on the Kennicott Glacier. This is another of those spots that would’ve been ridiculously difficult to get to in the summer. The river and a large lake block the route, which would mean a long and arduous clamber over the moraine approaching from the east .. I’m not even sure it’d be possible. I walked right up to this wall and took a few photos. This one I need to reprocess, I did it on my laptop. I’m not sure the calibration is right, and will look at it on my iMac, but for now, this shall do.

It was/is a pretty impressive wall. Glaciers constantly move and creak and groan all the time – it’s an eerie experience being up close and personal with them. The Kennicott Glacier is the first glacier I ever saw, or hiked on, so it’ll always be one I’m endeared to. My first ever hike on it I found this little cave where I could do in under the ice. It was pretty wild – I wouldn’t have done something like that if I wasn’t with someone who knew what they were doing, that’s for sure. Fortunately, the Kennicott and Root Glaciers aren’t too crevassed, so exploration on them is not too dangerous. Right now, with low water levels, a lot of the ice that is not normally exposed is up and waiting for its picture to be taken, so hopefully I’ll be back over there in a jiffy and shoot some more photos.
