Hey Folks,

I know I said I would stick with the Tebay Lakes Trip for now, but I’m not much of a stickler for plans – I like spontaneity. So, here’s a photo from earlier in the summer, from just near our campsite in Chittistone Pass, looking over Skolai Pass, Skolai Lake and the toe of the Russell Glacier, Wrangell St. Elias National Park. Summertime is awesome in Alaska, but wow, does sunrise come early. Not just early, but really soon after sunset. It makes shooting and keeping to any kind of regular schedule somewhat problematic. Often I’m shooting sunset and alpenglow until after midnight, get a couple of hours sleep, and then am up at 3am trying to catch first light in the morning. It’s fine when I’m out by myself shooting, but when I’m guiding non-photographers on a backpacking trip, it makes it tough .. I’m usually just going to bed for some sleep when folks wake up and want breakfast. 🙂

Camping in Chittistone Pass affords some of the most impressive views anywhere, and it often gets incredible light, particularly in the evening. This photo was taken about 30 yards from my campsite. Last year it was so socked in with nasty weather, all summer long it seemed, I didn’t hardly get anything from the area that I really liked. One 10 day trip I didn’t even take a single photo. This year I shot a lot more, and really enjoyed the light.
