Here’s what happens when the guide lets someone else lead. Sergei, aka, Borat, was confident of his ability to lead us to our next campsite. he’d been in this area with me last year, and figured he knew the way. So I said ‘sure, you go on ahead’, we’ll follow you. We were aiming to stay on the southern side of this ridge, staying well below the crest, traversing around to our campsite. Sergei pushed higher and higher t every opportunity, and before ya know it, we came over the top, looking toward Tebay Lakes to the north of us. Jodee’s standing here, looking around asking herself “What The Heck?” and the rest of the group had collapsed on the ground.

Well, that’s not QUITE the truth, but Sergei did lead us up this ridge – and it was a pretty sweet spot to hang out for a while. The hike down to the campsite was tough – I think everyone felt pretty done in though .. each step seemed to rock the body, especially the knees, and we couldn’t reach our campsite soon enough. I think this was the only section of our Bremner Mines to Tebay Lakes hike where all of us were pretty tired – usually, at least someone (mostly Jodee or Mike) were feeling bushy-tailed. It hadn’t actually been that long of a day, but the descent, steep, over lots of rocks, and some scrambling down over rocky boulders the size of 4 story buildings was just flat out tough. I think I might get a new pair of knees for next year. 🙂
Actually, this photo is a good example of what to do if you come on one of my hikes and want your picture taken:
- separate yourself from the gang,
- wear color-matching, cohesive outfits,
- wear colorful outfits,
- carry a colorful pack
- don’t be too far ahead,
- stop and pose without looking too candid,
- find a nice backdrop with something other than flat grey skies,
- be patient while I setup my camera gear.
I’m actually glad Sergei took us up here – the view is awesome, and it was really a nice stopping point. You can see Tebay Lakes down below – far, far down below.

OK, I will save that list and try to remember to do the exact opposite if I go on a hike with you. 🙂 Fantastic view.
According to my equations, the shortest route was “up and over”, not “traversing around”
…NOT!
I enjoyed scrambling over the rocky terrain. Up and over, traversing around, it mattered not. The view was fabulous and sense of achievement palpable as this ‘newbie’ glimpsed our final destination down in the valley. My own collapse to the ground was entirely due to an attempt to shelter from the wind – that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Jodee is now coordinating her winter hiking gear, having blended a little to well into the New England fall landscape.
